Jetsetting!

This is the first(of many!) international trip for us with little bean in tow (today 22+1).

The first leg was a 9ish hour flight ORD -> WAW to visit Kate and Renia (Anya’s friend and goddaughter). Although super short, the visit was very sweet and just in time for Mother’s day in Poland! Renia is convinced that we are having a boy in there :-). Time will tell, but regardless baby has been a trooper! Thanks to Bryce, was a culinarily A+ first transAtlantic crossing! We munched on organic raspberries and blueberries and even a whole Costco-sized lemon poppyseed 🥗 (yum!)

After landing we had a quick lunch and Renia planted a magic bean and then we went for a hike in Lazenki Krolewskie.

We found a very nice cafe with gelato! and then stumbled on a student concert.

After that we explored some more and had a limonad and a latte macchiato to keep us on the local time.

Andat the end of the day put together a really sweet dinner.

Day1 of the trip a huge success!

Onwards to St. Petersburg!

Happy New Year!

It’s been way too long since we wrote on here and hope at some point to be able to catch up with everything…..

Since last time:

We learned a dance

Got married

Went on a honeymoon to the Bahamas

Came back to Chicago and now the snow and coldapocalypse is upon us!

Oh, and there are so many more things in between I don’t even know where to start. I’ll start after finishing this review lecture I need to give in a couple of hours. In the meantime counting on Bryce to tell a story too.  All hopefully before the Chinese new year of the Pig starts.

Roadside cyclocross

Running out of gas on the interstate is a surreal experience. A marvel of modern engineering becomes an inefficient sled, friction gradually eating away at momentum. The gas pedal becomes useless, like the pedal on a children’s toy. Now add a time constraint: 45 minutes away from our destination with a dinner appointment in two hours. This may seem like the recipe for a crisis, but with the right outlook, it is also an opportunity for adventure.

Step 0: attempt to solve the problem via conventional means. I tried to use web and mobile apps to activate insurance roadside assistance, while Anya called local gas stations and highway patrol. Fifteen minutes later, after many busy signals and technology fails, we had a rescue truck scheduled. The problem: an ETA of 90 minutes. This is when we began to seriously consider other options.

After discussing walking distances to the nearest gas stations in each direction, we had a light bulb moment: there are bikes on the hitch rack! According to google, the nearest gas station is a quick 15 minute ride… starting from the road on the bridge above us. With wide shoulders and a feeder road not far back, this didn’t seem like a major obstacle. We removed the bikes from the rack, installed panniers, walked the bikes off the highway and onto the grass shoulder, and set off for adventure (and gas)!

The ground was soggy and awkwardly sloped, so we walked our way along until it firmed up and found the feeder road. Low traffic, but narrow, so we biked along the edge and found that the road went north – the wrong way! Instead we veered south into the thigh high roadside prairie, only to discover a waist high fence! Luckily no barbs… we took turns going over and lifted the bikes across, and carefully navigated the slope down to West Ridge Rd, our route ‘start point’. Segment one complete.

The bike ride to the gas station was a heart pounding dash, great exercise after five hours in the car. There were actually two gas station on opposite corners – the first had only one gallon gas takes at $10 each, but the second had none. We bought two to balance the panniers, filled up, stuffed the panniers (just barely fit), and started off towards the car. Segment two complete.

On the way back, we decided to try another, faster approach, on the opposite (east) side of West Ridge Rd, hoping to avoid the fence and the long trek around to the feeder road and inconveniently obstructing industrial area. We discovered an even thicker prairie, and a new fence! I was discouraged, but Anya pointed out that she has a cyclocross bike, which is designed for exactly this sort of adventure. We bushwhacked through the prairie with some difficulty, pedals getting caught in tangles of undergrowth, and regretted not bringing the machete. At the fence, we discovered a new challenge – it was chest high, and barbed! Luckily there was a beefy post nearby – Anya carefully climbed over and I handed over her bike. Final bushwhack through a narrow prairie strip and drainage ditch, and she was back about 10 yards east of the car. While she ran back to start filling the car, I carefully lifted my bike over and climbed after it, narrowly avoiding any barb / clothing / flesh interactions. I rushed back, just as a highway patrolman pulled up on the curb behind us. Segment three complete.

I assured the officer that we avoided biking anywhere near the highway on our gas acquisition tour. He gave us directions to the nearest gas station and waited to make sure the car started and we got on our way safely.

We forgot to stop tracking until we made it to the gas station, but that was oddly apropos, here is our track from empty to full gas tank:

Adventure complete, we continued our journey to family dinner… less than an hour late! Lessons learned:

  1. Always bring the machete. Always.
  2. Respect the gaslight
  3. Cyclocross rules

OktoberFest FunkenHausen Style

  1. People who have improved our day today: Caitlin-sp

Some days after work it’s fun to explore a new area. We picked the Chicago Ave near Ukie Village/Noble Square part of town… in fact, I am not too sure which part of town this truly is. I believe it’s called West Town! Because Bryce would be traveling home this Friday, we decided to go for a fancy restaurant on a Thursday instead. Somehow SushiFriday could not be celebrated too early so we walked nearly the whole length of Chicago Avenue looking for the most unique dining venue. We already tried Beatnik, and there was a smattering of mexican, thai and pizza places. We found the perfect solution for unique eats at the newly opened Funkenhausen!  German hospitality with southern comfort and it more than lives up to this monniker. The lead chef draws his inspiration from a research & development trip (more on this later) to Argentina and in general prepares “a mishmash of where I grew up and what my family fed me.”

We shared a pretzel appetizer, shown above, followed by a delicious sunchoke salad “The Other Artichoke” on the menu. It’s delicious, and I had no idea what sunflower root tastes like — amazing! Especially when paired with sunflower sprouts and grapes and smoked trout on the side. Y-U-M!

After trying the sweet potato and mushrooms with dried apples and walnuts and pistou, and washing it down with a kellerbier (sorry oktoberfest bier.. it wasn’t quite our thing) we had little room left for dessert.

There is a lot more to explore in this part of town and although the road seems under chronic construction there are some hidden gems: Hoosier mama pies? Anyone?

Enpanada Tuesdays

Tuesdays are our days for exploring the West side of the suburbs and these past two weeks we’ve come back to  the town of Riverside. Its fascinating with its completely curvy streets and when you look on a map it reminds Anya of paint by number. It would be fun to bike a fun pattern there sometime!  So far we only managed one Strava doodle. (Link here).

This week is a call week for Anya, so in addition to not being able to go too far from the hospital, she occasionally has to spend the night there (in the operating room). Monday into Tuesday was like that, so the adventures were a bit abbreviated in favor of getting something delicious to eat and getting some paint samples to pick a bathroom color.

After the VA we drove over to Empanadus (see prior post) which continues to get better and better!  We had all their vegan empanadas and Bryce sampled the Al Pastor and bean and potato one. We had the apple version for dessert.

At the end of the night, we chatted with the empanada guys as they were cutting up 15 pounds of onions. Definitely they should have a flavor of the month and we made several possible suggestions. The owners are expanding and hoping to  have a shop in each of the 50 states…so you might be able to sample them soon (otherwise a trip to Riverside is more than worth it!)

A Night At The Midnight Circus

It was the perfect end of a long (and challenging week).  After walking out of County, I was ready to collapse, but Bryce was ready to the rescue! There are usually numerous events going on in Chicago at the same time, mostly it’s hard to focus on a few to choose from. We settled on driving north and checking out the circus in Holstein Park!  Hands down we would highly recommend seeing the Midnight Circus performance!  It’s full of acrobatics, feats of balance and creative talent. Favorites included the balance beam, the matchbox juggler and the dog tricks.

Midnightcircus.net is worth checking out!

Unicycle Crew

Today after work we went to Kiwanis Park in Riverside. It’s a cute Park with lots to do: two baseball fields, picnic area, corn holes, horseshoes, canoe launch (to Salt Creek–stay tuned for more info), volleyball and basketball courts and the best of all a small, short disc golf course. And it’s only 15 minutes from work! Perfect! After playing 7 holes, Bryce won with excellent precision, we switched to a new hobby: unicycling.

While Anya tried the “hold onto the fence” approach, Bryce cemented the starting off the curb approach from one of the disc tees. Not sure if the time lapse caught any of our successes, but great fun was had by all… And (almost) no injuries!

Here is our attempt at time-lapse photography demonstrating what learning to unicycle looks like in the early stages, with sunset fast approaching and a little league game in the background:

time lapse of unicycle practice

After that we discovered a cute center of Riverside with amazing empanadas at Empanadus!  It is sooooo deliciously worth the visit. We bought out the last of their vegan ones, so go back tomorrow for the restock!

We ended this blissful evening with a glass of Malbec (because what better to pair with an empanada?) at La Barra across the street. Perfect Tuesday.

Bonus: follow the link for more unicycle time-lapse!

Mayhem

People who have added to our adventures on 9/8/2018: Karen, Jeff, Ken, Travis, Amy, Rosa, Tim, Jim, Rodney, Matt, Corrina, Nicky, Kathy, Anne, and Tiger!

We met 2+ years ago while checking out a quarry. Anya organized a Meetup through the Chicago Hiking and Outdoors group at the time in order to bike and kayak the quarry at Lemont. Since then, we’ve done many such “Mayhem” adventures.

Mayhem: ˈmāˌhem/: noun and verb

  •  an outing of unknown route and duration, involving physical activity surrounded by nature.

This past Saturday we planned a three rivers adventure with the new group that formed 2 years ago on September 27,2016: HiYak Adventures. Although we’ve paddled the route a year ago and were pretty comfortable with the route, we scouted out the area over Labor day by bike. What we found was that the launch sites and large parts of the Desplaines River was overgrown with huge mutant lily pads! In fact the river looked more like a field, than a flowing body of water. In addition, the I&M canal had a particular “eau” during the hot weather that was only tolerable while breezing by it on bikes. This changed things a bit. Not to be disheartened, we decided to move the launch site to the DuPage River, and consider the mayhem to be part of the lily pad crossing and then see how it goes.

On Saturday, we got up early and drove to the confluence of the rivers. Several people arrived about 45 minutes early and by 10 AM we had almost all 17 who signed up (16 humans and one doggie!). There were people who had inflatable kayaks and some of us with foldable. Once everyone was assembled, Jeff and Anya gave instructions for what to expect on this type of trip.  We took a quick picture with the cute sign nearby and were off to paddle!

Here is the route:

Beginnings

September is the beginning of the school year in many countries and September 1st is the so called “Day of Knowledge” in my home country of Russia. September 4th is as good a day as any for us to begin our new blogging adventures. Us being Bryce and Anya.  You’ll find posts from both of us on this site (should be able to tell them apart 😉 ) as Anya’s will have an abundance of eye terms  and mayhem teaching trips abroad (her forte)  and Bryce’s will likely be somewhat mathey and cryptic (he’s really good at those) or food-related (he’s iron chef level at that).

As we learn to document our adventures, it will become quite obvious that we are both passionate about kayaking and outdoor adventures. One of the goals of this site is inspire others to explore the waterways of our planet while volunteering our time for causes we believe in.

Enjoy the journey and write back often!

(Anya)
